McLane Company to Buy Meadowbrook Meat Company (MBM)

Texas Business reports:  TEMPLE, Texas—McLane Company Inc., a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway, has entered into an agreement to acquire Meadowbrook Meat Company Inc. (MBM).

MBM, based in Rocky Mount, North Carolina is one of the nation's largest customized foodservice distributors for national restaurant chains.

The acquisition is subject to customary closing conditions, including the termination of the applicable waiting period under the Hart-Scott-Rodino Act.

MBM will continue to be run  by the current executive management team, and operating out of its existing facilities in the same markets.

“The Wordsworth family has built one of the finest and most highly respected companies in our industry, and we look forward to providing Jerry Wordsworth and his team our full support to continue MBM’s leadership in the market, while positioning ourselves for further growth,” said McLane chief executive Grady Rosier in a prepared statement.

“We are excited to become part of the McLane and Berkshire Hathaway family, which provides an extraordinary base to continue to serve our wonderful customers and expand our business,” said MBM chief executive Jerry Wordsworth in a statement.”

McLane is a $33 billion dollar supply chain services company, providing grocery and foodservice supply chain solutions for convenience stores, mass merchants, drug stores, as well as chain restaurants throughout the United States. With 40 distribution centers and one of the nation’s largest private fleets, the company optimizes the purchase, flow and sale of products from thousands of suppliers to more than 65,000 locations.

In addition McLane provides alcohol beverage distribution via its acquisitions of Empire Distributors Inc., Horizon Wine & Spirits and Delta Wine & Spirits over the past 3 years. McLane is a wholly owned unit of Berkshire Hathaway Inc. and employs 15,000 teammates globally.  

MBM was founded by J.R. Wordsworth in 1947 as a pork processor catering to its local market in Rocky Mount, NC. The company has grown to become a $6 billion foodservice distributor, providing foodservice supply chain services to thousands of the branded national and regional chain restaurants within the continental United States.
