Texas Business reports: DALLAS—Satterfield & Pontikes Construction (S&P) took top honors in two categories at the Engineering News-Record (ENR) regional awards banquet held recently. S&P’s Kathlyn Joy Gilliam Collegiate Academy project in Dallas and Jackson Barracks project in New Orleans were selected as 2011 Best Projects in ENR’s Texas-Louisiana region.
The new energy-efficient and environmentally friendly Kathlyn Joy Gilliam Collegiate Academy, constructed just south of downtown Dallas by S&P’s Dallas Business Unit, was selected as the best project in the K-12 Education category.
Designed by SHW Group, the 104,000-square-foot early college high school includes geothermal heating and cooling, low-consumption plumbing fixtures, and energy-efficient lighting in classrooms, auditorium and gymnasium.
Kathlyn Joy Gilliam Collegiate Academy was constructed on a10-acre green field site located adjacent to a nature preserve. High-end components and finishes are showcased throughout the school, including Swisspearl fiber concrete panels, perforated metal ceiling, Italian marble, bamboo and one-of-a-kind, stainless steel light fixtures inside stairway handrails.
The restoration of Jackson Barracks garrison structures, completed by S&P’s Gulf Coast Business Unit, was selected as the region’s best project in the Renovation/Restoration category. A levee breach resulting from Hurricane Katrina flooded and damaged every building at Jackson Barracks. This project also won ENR’s national award for the best renovation project in the U.S.
S&P served as the general contractor and Yeates & Yeates Architects provided architectural services for the project that restored five barracks according to strict historical renovation guidelines. The buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The projects were eligible for ENR’s national competition. The Best Projects competition is held each year in ENR’s seven regions across the country to recognize the best of the best construction projects. Judging criteria included safety, innovation, teamwork, design and construction excellence.
