Texas Business reports:  Richardson— Hill & Wilkinson received the top green building award from Education Design Showcase for the LEED Platinum-certified UT Dallas Student Services Building.

Only three university projects were selected as 2011 Green Judges’ Choice Winners, among submittals from throughout the U.S.

“We are very pleased to have earned this recognition on behalf of the owner and the project team,” said firm co-chairman Greg Wilkinson in a prepared statement.  “Being the only Texas project also makes us proud of our team’s accomplishments.”

In the past five years, Hill & Wilkinson has completed nearly $300 million in LEED-certified projects.

The recognition is one of many bestowed upon the university’s project.  Most recently, the project was recognized with The Accessibility Award, presented by the Texas Governor’s Committee on People with Disabilities and the Accessibility Professionals Association.

Last year, the Dallas Business Journal named the UT Dallas Student Services Building the Best Public Green Deal of the Year, bringing the total to six sustainability awards for this four story, 74,000-square-foot, eco-friendly facility.

“Of course, this recognition reflects UT Dallas’ commitment to sustainability and the talents of an outstanding project team, including Perkins + Will, the design architects,” Wilkinson said.

“What is most gratifying to me is the fact that this building, which was constructed as an initiative of the University’s student body, has garnered such a significant number of awards,” said Rick Dempsey, associate vice president for facilities management.

The award-winning projects displayed on the EducationDesignShowcase.com site are evaluated by a jury of administrators, architects, and facility planners for excellence in design and functional planning. Primary consideration is given to the architect/designer’s response to the program requirements, aesthetic characteristics of the solution, innovation and creativeness, efficient use of space, site design, adaptation and development, safety and accessibility for all users, and attention to the environment, maintainability and energy use.

With revenues of approximately $250 million, Hill & Wilkinson is based in Dallas.
